Chapter Thirty-One

Rue finally joined Clover where she was back at the window yet again, concerned over Clover’s single-minded preoccupation with wards and weavings. ‘We’re missing spring,’ she said casually, looking out at the cold day, not seeing the wards Clover had been frowning over, but believing entirely that they were there just as she said.

‘Perhaps we’ll be back for summer,’ Clover answered. But her mind wasn’t on her words. Instead, she’d turned inward, to search the whiteness, searching for a way to see what she wanted. She’d been looking and looking, girding herself to wade out into it, determined that she could induce the state that so often took her by stealth. Finally, she took a breath and stepped out into the whiteness, letting it surround her.

‘Let’s go into the village,’ Rue said. She looked at Clover, thinking Clover would be pleased with the idea, but Clover was staring off into space. Rue touched her gently on the shoulder, but Clover was gone already.

Another seizure.

‘Help,’ Rue called to Ebony, as Clover swayed where she stood. ‘Help me lie her down.’ Rue put her hands on Clover, sure that Clover wasn’t going to manage to stay standing this time as she usually did, and she drew her down to the floor, going with her, until Clover’s pale face rested in her lap.

‘They seem to be getting more frequent,’ Ebony said, coming to crouch beside them.

Rue just shook her head even though she agreed. ‘Where’s she gone now?’
